Bower Birds by Stella M. Turk MBE

Or there is more than
One way to attract a lady
The male may build a tower
With a deal of flower power
But various objects will do
Especially if white or blue.

Although this is not a nest
It is built with real zest
Plus many an artistic frill
Showing some aesthetic skill,
He then hides nearby but out of sight
Hoping she will like colour and height.
If he knows she is near he will enhance
His appeal by performing an intricate dance
The lady builds the real nest on her own
Without any help of her mate, the clown

Written after hearing a delightful account by David Attenborough (on 10th July 2009) the varied behaviour of different species of bower birds. It was a Radio 4 repeat of an earlier broadcast.
