Evolution and risk by Stella M. Turk MBE
The dare-devils or Enterprising men and mice
Man may claim new territory
And change the course of history
(The risks he took in outer space
Caused technology to grow apace).
Mouse or mite may do the same
And acquire a sub-specific name
(They soon change their form
With deviation from their norm).
Exploration is one of nature’s tools
To choose the best from the gene pools.

Stellas notes:
This ditty was prompted by a talk on Radio 4 in June, concerning the role of risk in evolution. It certainly can aid dispersal of plant or animal by pushing individuals to the uttermost limit.
Perhaps this is a good definition of ‘progress’!
